Getting Started

Everything you need to know before your first story

FableJar is a personalized bedtime story app and parenting tool for children aged 3 to 10. We create stories where your child is always the hero, facing real challenges they're dealing with — like making friends, finding their courage, sibling rivalry, or bedtime fears. Every story is tailored to your child's name, age, personality, and specific situation. It's not just entertainment. It's a tool that helps your child grow through the stories they love.
FableJar is designed for children aged 3 to 10. We have three age bands — 3 to 5, 6 to 8, and 8 to 10. The language, vocabulary, story length, and themes automatically adjust based on your child's age range. A story for a 4-year-old reads very differently from one for a 9-year-old.
You have two options. You can sign in with Google — this is the fastest way, no password needed, one tap and you're in. Or you can enter your email and we'll send you a magic link — click the link in your email and you're logged in. We don't use passwords because we know how frustrating it is to remember yet another one.
Just message our support team at support@fablejar.com and we'll update it for you.
Yes. If you sign in with Google, you never need a password. Just tap "Sign in with Google" on the login page and you're in. It's the easiest way to use FableJar.

How It Works

The story creation process from start to finish

It takes about 60 seconds. You select your child, choose a challenge (or describe your own), optionally add friends, choose a story setting (real world or fantasy), and tap Create. Within a minute, a fully personalized story is ready — with your child's name, their friends, and beautiful illustrations.
We have 12 challenge categories: managing anger, screen time and focus, making friends, finding my courage, bedtime fears, worry and overthinking, sibling rivalry, feeling left out, separation anxiety, dealing with bullies, listening and patience, and eating healthy. For each one, you can also drill down into a specific scenario — 53 in all — so for example, under “making friends” you can choose “joining a group that’s already playing” or “being the new kid.” This level of specificity means the story matches your child’s exact situation, not just a general theme.
You can type in any specific situation in the custom challenge field. For example, "she's nervous about joining a new dance class where she doesn't know anyone." The AI will use your description to create a story tailored to that exact situation.
We use a proven storytelling framework combined with AI to generate every story. The framework ensures each story follows a structure where your child's feelings are reflected honestly, they face a real moment of difficulty, they take a small brave action, they experience an earned result, and they feel different by the end. On top of that, the AI uses your child's name, age range, interests, personality traits, and the specific challenge you've selected to create a story that is hyper-specific to your child's situation.
Both start from the same place: the challenge you chose for your child. Real World keeps the story in familiar surroundings — school, the playground, a birthday party, home — so your child recognises the situation as their own. Fantasy World tells the same lesson through one of three themes: Prince & Princess, Superhero or Adventure Explorer, where your child is royalty, a young hero or an explorer. The challenge and the lesson are identical either way — only the setting, the characters and the pictures change. Both are fully personalised with your child's name and friends.
Story length depends on your child's age range. For ages 3 to 5, stories are approximately 400 to 500 words, about 4 to 5 minutes of reading. For ages 6 to 8, stories are approximately 700 to 1,000 words, about 8 to 10 minutes. For ages 8 to 10, stories are approximately 1,000 to 1,200 words, about 10 to 12 minutes. You can also set your preferred story length — short, medium, or long — in your child's profile.
Yes. Every story comes with beautiful AI-generated illustrations that bring the adventure to life. If you've described your child's appearance or generated an avatar in their profile, the illustrations will reflect what your child actually looks like — their hair, skin tone, glasses, favourite clothes. Their friends get illustrated too.

Personalization

How stories are tailored to your child

Very. Every story uses your child's first name, their age range (which determines vocabulary and complexity), their personality traits, their interests, the specific challenge and sub-challenge you've selected, the story setting you've chosen, and any friends you've included. The result is a story that feels like it was written specifically for your child — because it was.
Yes. You only need their first name and gender — boy, girl, or non-binary. That's it. The AI weaves them naturally into the adventure as your child's companion. Your child faces the challenge together with their friend, which makes the story feel more real and reassuring.
Yes. After a story is generated, you can copy the story link and share it via WhatsApp, SMS, or any other way you like. If you've provided the friend's parent's email address in the Real Friends section, we'll automatically send them a beautifully formatted email with a direct link to read the story. No account needed to view a shared story.
Yes. In your child's profile, you can choose from 10 base presets, describe their appearance (hair, eyes, skin, clothes, glasses), or upload a photo. We generate a personalized avatar that is used consistently across all story illustrations. If you upload a photo, it is used only to generate the avatar and is deleted from our systems immediately after — we never store the original photo.
The number of profiles depends on your plan. Free allows 1, Starter allows 1, and Family allows up to 5.

Voice Narration

Bringing stories to life with sound

Yes. You can choose to read the story aloud yourself, have an AI voice narrate it, or use a family member's cloned voice.
Voice cloning lets anyone your child loves — a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling — record just 30 seconds of their voice. We then use AI to create a storytelling voice based on that recording. Every bedtime story can then be narrated in that person's voice. It's perfect for when a parent is traveling for work or a grandparent lives far away — your child still hears their voice at bedtime.
Go to the Voice Studio in the app. You can record your own voice directly or send an invite to a family member. They receive a link, record 30 seconds on their phone, and the voice profile is ready to use.
Voice cloning is paid-only — Starter includes 1 voice profile, Family includes 3. Voice narration is available on every plan when you have voice credits, including Free.

Safety & Privacy

How we protect your child and your data

Yes. Safety is the foundation FableJar is built on, not a feature added on top. FableJar is fully COPPA compliant. There are zero ads — ever. We never share your child's data with third parties for advertising or marketing. At every point where we collect information — your child's first name, age range, interests, challenges, appearance — you are clearly told how that information will be used. Your consent is always taken. You are never in the dark.
Yes. FableJar is fully COPPA compliant. We collect only what we need to create personalized stories. We never sell children's data or share it for anyone else's purposes; the services that process it to build the story are listed in our Privacy Policy. We don't show ads. Parents have full control to review, download, and delete all of their child's data at any time.
We collect your child's first name, age range (not exact date of birth), gender, interests, personality traits, challenges, and optionally their physical description for avatar generation. All of this is used solely to create personalized stories. None of it is sold, and none of it is shared for anyone else's purposes — the services that help build the story receive only what they need, and our Privacy Policy names each one.
Yes. You can download all of your child's data — profile, stories, and preferences — in JSON format from their profile page.
Yes. You can delete a child profile at any time from the Child Profiles section. When you delete a child profile, all associated data is permanently removed — stories, illustrations, avatar, reaction recordings, and preferences. This deletion is permanent and cannot be undone, so please be sure before you confirm.
When you delete your account, all personal data is permanently removed from FableJar — all child profiles, stories, voice recordings, reaction recordings, and account information. Two things sit outside that cascade. Financial transaction records are retained by Stripe for the minimum period required by law for tax purposes. And the AI generation traces held by our monitoring provider, Langfuse Cloud, are not deleted along with your account — they expire under that service's retention setting instead, and you can ask us to remove them sooner. Everything else within FableJar is destroyed.
No. FableJar is completely ad-free. We will never show ads to you or your child. This is a fundamental commitment, not a temporary policy.

Story Sharing

Sharing stories with family and friends

After a story is generated, you can copy the story link and share it via WhatsApp, SMS, email, or any other method. Anyone with the link can read the full story — no account needed.
Yes. If you add a friend's parent's email address in the Real Friends section, we automatically send them an email every time a story featuring their child is generated. The email includes the story title and a direct link to read it.
Shared with Me is where you see stories that other parents have created featuring your child. If Samaira's mum creates a story and includes your child as a character, that story automatically appears in your Shared with Me section. You get a notification when a new story is shared.

Story Worlds

Choosing the world your story takes place in

Every story is set either in the Real World or in a Fantasy World. Real World means the everyday places your child already knows — school, the park, a birthday party, home, the neighbourhood. Fantasy World gives you three themes: Prince & Princess, Superhero and Adventure Explorer. Whichever you pick, the challenge you chose stays exactly the same — only the setting, the characters and the pictures change.
Yes. When you create a story you choose between Real World and Fantasy World. Real World keeps the story in familiar surroundings so your child recognises the situation as their own. Fantasy World tells the same lesson through one of three themes — Prince & Princess, Superhero or Adventure Explorer — where your child is royalty, a young hero or an explorer. The challenge and the lesson are identical either way.
